This figure shows example diagrams of the following three commonly used soil sampling patterns:

• Judgemental – samples are based on prior knowledge of the site.
• Systematic – samples are located at regular intervals.
• Stratified – The study area is divided into non-overlapping sub-areas and samples are obtained from each area.
