The Environmental Reporting Act organises the environment into five domains: air, atmosphere and climate, fresh water, land, and marine. The Ministry for the Environment and Statistics New Zealand publish a report on one of the domains every six months and a report on all of the domains every three years.

The Environmental Reporting Regulations set the topics to be reported on in environmental reports. Topics identify key issues within each domain.
