This figure shows New Zealand’s total primary energy supply by fuel from 1974 through 2003, expressed in hundreds of petajoules. The energy sources are coal (net), imported oil and oil products, indigenous oil (net), gas, hydro, geothermal, and other renewables. The overall trend shows a marked increase in the supply of other renewables, geothermal, hydro, and gas; a relatively smaller increase in the supply of indigenous oil (net) and imported oil and oil products; and a relatively flat supply of coal (net). The supply of indigenous oil and imported oil and oil products declined in the 1980s and then increased through the 1990s. The source of this data is the Ministry of Economic Development (2005).
