Process for applying for a Clean Development Mechanism letter of approval

Note: Boxes shaded in grey indicate the stages in the CDM project cycle when you can apply for a letter of approval from the NZ DNA.

Question 1. Will you be receiving the certified emission reductions in the initial distribution from the Clean Development Mechanism registry?
No – Not eligible to apply for a letter of approval
Yes – Go to question 2.

Question 2. Are you a qualified person to open a holding account in the New Zealand Emission Unit Register?
No – Not eligible to apply for a letter of approval
Yes – Go to question 3.

Question 3. Will you be receiving long-term certified emission reductions from an afforestation/reforestation project?
No – Go to question 4.
Yes – Not eligible to apply for a letter of approval

Question 4. Is the project in the nuclear power sector?
No – Go to question 5.
Yes – Not eligible to apply for a letter of approval

Question 5. Has the project been approved by the host party?
No – Not eligible for a letter of approval
Yes – Go to question 6.

Question 6. Have you made the project design document available for public comment?
No – Not eligible to apply for a letter of approval
Yes – Apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority and go to question 7.

Question 7. Is the application complete?
No – Provide more information to New Zealand Designated National Authority
Yes – Letter of approval processed.  Approval not granted, contact Designated National Authority to discuss next steps.  Approval granted, submit letter of approval to Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board.

 

Clean Development project cycle

  1. Project design document development – can not apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  2. Host party letter of approval - can not apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  3. Validation – can apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  4. Registration - can apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  5. Monitoring - can apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  6. Verification - can apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
  7. Issuance - can apply for a letter of approval from the New Zealand Designated National Authority
