Text description of figure

The figure consists of two maps of New Zealand showing the July-June PED accumulation (mm) for two severe drought years: 1982/83 on the left, and 1988/89 on the right. The maps show a similar pattern with the highest PED in the east of both islands and low values in the west in both years. The difference between the two maps is in the relative intensity of drought in eastern parts of the country. In 1982/83, PED was more extreme (over 600mm) in Marlborough, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, whereas in 1988/89 the highest PED values (over 700mm) occurred in Canterbury around Lincoln.
