The figure is a bar graph of accumulated July-June PED (in mm) at a gridpoint nearest to Lincoln versus time, for the period of 1972/73 to 2002/03. The height of each bar represents the amount of accumulated PED and ranges from a minimum of about 250mm during 1983/84 to a maximum value of about 850 mm during 1988/89. Each bar is colour-coded to indicate the phase of ENSO (El Niño, La Niña, and ENSO neutral) during the summer of the year in question. Most of the high PED values occur during either El Niño or La Niña events.
