The figure shows the map of New Zealand indicating the change in July-June PED between 1950/51-1977/78 and 1978/79-2002/03. Positive values (drier conditions in more recent IPO phase) of over 50mm are found in eastern regions around East Cape, Kaikoura, Banks Peninsula and coastal Otago. The regions of Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Banks Peninsula up to Kaikoura and Otago all experienced a positive change in PED of at least +20mm.
A reduction in long-term PED occurred after 1977/78 for most of the South Island, except for eastern regions mentioned above. The largest negative changes (-20mm and below) are found over the Waikato, King Country and the Volcanic Plateau, northwest Nelson, parts of the West Coast, Inland Otago and Southland.
