This figure shows the PED for a typical 1-in-20 year drought for various parts of the country. It shows that the typical 1-in-20 year drought in Central Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and the east Cape reaches PED levels of 600 to 800mm, whereas the typical 1-in-20 year drought in Southland, Manawatu, Bay of Plenty and Northland is reached with about 400mm PED, and in the Waikato and northern Taranaki with only 200mm. The South Island west coast is always sufficiently wet so as not to experience any droughts with PED levels above 50mm.
