The Auckland Regional Council Erosion Management Manual gives a hierarchy of measures to consider when preparing a response strategy, which depend on planning timeframes.
Moving from timeframes of over 100 years down to less than 5 years, actions include:
- 100 years or more: Land use strategy for a particular "greenfield" site
- 50 years: Land use strategy
- 20 years: Buffer techniques, such as zoning and reserves
- 10 years: Planning techniques, and in the very short term,
- 5 years: Interim management measures, such as structural options, or doing nothing.
