Return to the point in the document where this figure is located.

Text description of figure

The risk assessment process consists of five steps:

Step 1: Establish the context

Step 2: Identify the risks, which also includes: Step 2.1: Identify the extent of the built and human environment within the coastal margin Step 2.2: Identify the coastal morphology and how it varies spatially over the area Step 2.3: Identify the hazard types based on current and historical information, and Step 2.4: Identify the drivers of the hazards and how they might be affected by climate

Step 3: Analyse the risks, including Step 3.1: Assess the probability (or likelihood) of a particular hazard event occurring, and Step 3.2: Assess the consequences of the hazard event occurring

Step 4: Evaluate the risks

Step 5: Treat the risks, choosing appropriate response options from Chapter 5

At all steps (1 to 5) there should be communication with regional and territorial authorities and consultation with affected parties.

After Step 5, monitoring and review of the process should occur and if necessary the process starts again at Step 1.
