Conceptual representation of accommodating sea-level rise (SLR) based on an understanding and balanced consideration between the possibility of a particular sea-level rise occurring, the potential consequences and associated adaptation costs, and the potential residual risks associated with the accommodated sea-level rise being exceeded
Text description of figure 2.8: A representation of how an allowance for sea-level rise (SLR) can be accommodated in to decision-making, made up of four components:
- A figure that has the possibility of a particular sea-level rise occurring over the planning timeframe plotted against the potential consequences. The example shows an increasing trend as the possibility of a particular sea-level being reached becomes more unlikely with the resulting consequences becoming greater.
- Following on from this, a second figure has the cost of adaptation plotted against the potential consequences, showing an increasing trend as the cost of adaptation becomes higher as the consequences become more major.
- Both of these figures then lead to consideration of the acceptability of risk, where sea-level rise to be accommodated based on a balanced consideration of three factors: the possibility of particular sea levels being reached over the planning timeframe, the associated consequences and potential adaptation costs, and how any residual risks would be managed.
- This leads to the value of sea-level rise being accommodated.
