Figure 2.3: Projections of global mean sea-level rise to the mid-2090s

Text description of figure 2.3:This figure shows measured sea-level for Auckland over the past 107 years and the decadal averaged global sea levels and associated uncertainty over the past 137 years, compared to the IPCC WG1 Fourth Assessment Report predictions for sea-level rise over this century to the 2090s, relative to the 1980-1999 global average.

The line for the decadal averaged global sea levels shows a trend of sea level increasing about 245 mm over 137 years.

The IPCC projections are represented as a continuing, and accelerating, increase in sea level, showing the projected globally averaged sea-level rise fanning out to between 0.18 and 0.59 metres, a range of 0.41 metres sea-level rise, by the 2090s, and the potential additional increase in the upper range of sea-level rise of between 0.1 to 0.2 metres by the 209-s (if Greenland and Antarctica contributions were to grow linearly with global average temperature change).

Six vertical coloured lines on the right-hand side show the range in sea-level projections from the various Global Climate Models for the six emission scenarios.
