Text description of figure

Presents a map of New Zealand indicating:

  • the full extent of the 37 LENZ Level II environments
  • areas of remaining indigenous vegetation not protected
  • areas of remaining indigenous vegetation under legal protection.

Each region has some proportion of the 37 environments. However the main areas with less than 20% indigenous vegetation remaining are concentrated in:

  • the Lower Waikato and Hauraki Plains
  • Western Taranaki
  • Lowland areas of the Rangitikei/Manawatu area
  • Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa
  • Canterbury Plains
  • Areas in Otago and Southland.

A very small area of this is legally protected, including areas in the Hauraki Plains, the base of Mount Taranaki, and areas in Southland.
