Figure 3-1 presents three graphs of emissions (grams emitted per kilometre) of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HCs) as a function of vehicle speed. The curves are all reverse hyperbolas (similar to the trademark Nike logo) with initially high emissions at low speeds (< 10 km/hr), dropping suddenly to low emissions (20 km/hr) and then slowly rising emissions at moderate speeds (20 – 100 km/hr). The fourth graph of emissions of particulate matter (grams emitted per kilometre) as a function of vehicle speed is initially low at low speeds (< 20 km/hr) with a increasingly higher emissions at moderate to high speeds (20 – 120 km/hr).
