We are the government’s main adviser on the environment and on national policies and laws necessary for good environmental management. We provide advice to government on the state of the environment, causes of changes to environmental quality, and action necessary to improve environmental management.
Our vision: A healthy environment which sustains nature and people.
Our mission: Making a difference through environmental leadership.
Our role: Advise the government on environmental issues and solutions, and promote and support actions that improve environmental management.
We strive to act and communicate so that we are widely recognised as being client focused, constructive, effective, collaborative and reasoned. These values form the framework for how we operate, and they reflect key elements of the principles of behaviour outlined in the New Zealand Public Service Code of Conduct.
During the year ending 30 June 2002 our management, policy and corporate services staff were organised along the following lines.
As discussed in his introduction, our new Chief Executive initiated a review of the way we are structured to deal with the wide range of issues and topics on which our advice is sought. More information on our new structure can be found on our website at www.mfe.govt.nz/about/
