In mid-October the Guide to Product Stewardship for Non-priority Products was released. The guide explains the concept of product stewardship for non-priority products and outlines how schemes can apply for accreditation later in the year under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.
The guide is now available on the Ministry’s website http://www.mfe.govt.nz/publications/waste/guide-product-stewardship/index.html

New Zealand signed a new Environment Cooperation Agreement with Malaysia as part of the new Free Trade Agreement on 26 October. The agreement provides for Malaysia and New Zealand to work together on matters of common environmental interest and concern. Ministry for the Environment officials will meet with their Malaysian counterparts in November to begin discussions on areas for cooperation. These could include policies to improve waste management, policies for more efficient use of water resources, technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and practices for sustainable management of forests. For more information on international forums and agreements go to www.mfe.govt.nz/laws/trade/trade.html
A user guide for the National Policy Statement (NPS) on Electricity Transmission should be available early in the New Year. The guide will help local authorities better understand how to implement the NPS, which came into effect in 2008. It will focus on how the NPS can be best given effect to through regional and district planning instruments. The Ministry will run workshops with local authorities once the guidance material has been released. For more information see www.mfe.govt.nz/rma/central/transmission/index.html or contact Rachel Treston, (04) 439 7725 or email rachel.treston@mfe.govt.nz
