mean in practice.

Following advising on the Resource Management (Simplifying and Streamlining) Amendment Bill 2009, the Ministry’s Resource Management Practice Team is now working to inform people who regularly work with the Resource Management Act (RMA) about the changes to the legislation.

The RMA is New Zealand's main piece of legislation that sets out how we should manage our environment. The Resource Management Amendment Bill came into force on 1 October.

In September, the Ministry team, in conjunction with local government, held 22 seminars in 19 locations throughout New Zealand to explain the changes to the RMA. The seminars attracted around 2900 attendees. The team also worked with the New Zealand Planning Institute to deliver 13 full-day workshops on the changes.

The many questions raised at the seminars have helped identify areas where further information and guidance is needed about the changes. More information will be published on the Ministry website in the next few months on the issues raised.

The Ministry is also running an RMA helpdesk (0800 RMA INFO) that anyone with queries about the changes to the RMA and how they affect them.

All the Quality Planning guidance notes are being updated, with the first ones off the block being the consultation and enforcement guidance notes due this month. These can be found at www.qp.org.nz

The popular An Everyday Guide to the RMA series targeted at the general public is also being updated.

Nine fact sheets on various aspects of the amendments are downloadable on the Ministry’s website at www.mfe.govt.nz/publications/rma/rma-amendment-act-factsheets-2009/index.html
