Through this output class, the Minister purchased the service to promote and facilitate action for the environment, and host international celebrations for World Environment Day 2008 in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme.

Output: Coordinate New Zealand’s hosting of World Environment Day 2008 through facilitating the organisation of events nationwide which raise the awareness of environmental issues relating to climate change.

Performance Measure 2007/08 Performance
Facilitate at least 100 environment awareness raising events during the week of World Environment Day 2008. Achieved – The Ministry developed and delivered a programme of events across New Zealand to celebrate World Environment Day. This included Government funded events organised at national and community level, as well as unfunded events. Over 200 events and activities took place, including a number of core United Nations Environmental Programme events in the host city Wellington. These events and activities spanning community, science and business sectors, raised public awareness of "Kicking the Carbon Habit moving toward a low carbon economy" and broader environmental issues relating to climate change. There was press, radio and television coverage of the events and activities throughout World Environment Day week.
Facilitate action for the environment in every region throughout New Zealand. Achieved – The Ministry facilitated action for the environment by funding events and activities in all regions throughout New Zealand.
