Applying for funding from the Freshwater Improvement Fund

Current funding round - key dates

Dates are indicative and are subject to change. Any changes to dates will be published here.

23 February 2017 Funding round opens for applications
13 April 2017 (mid-day) Funding round closes
May to June 2017  Assessment panel considers applications
Late June to July 2017 Minister makes final funding decisions and applicants are notified
July to December 2017 Successful applicants finalise project plans and sign deed of funding agreements
December 2017 Projects begin

Guide for applicants

If you are considering applying for funding from the Freshwater Improvement Fund you will need to read the ‘Guide for Applicants 2017’. The guide will help you answer the questions in the Freshwater Improvement Fund application form. It also includes the eligibility and assessment criteria.

We are happy to clarify what information is required in the application form (part 1 and 2) and to discuss your proposal before the fund closing date (mid-day 13 April 2017).

Request a high-level review

If you would like a high level review of your application before submitting the final version to us, you can email your application to fif@mfe.govt.nz by 5pm on Tuesday 28 March 2017. Please put ‘Request for feedback’ in the title of your email. 

Please note:

  • we are unable to give specific guidance on the content of your application for funding
  • any discussions about projects and/or applications provides no guarantee of a successful outcome for the applicant
  • we are unable to assess your chances of funding as the final decision is made by the Minister for the Environment following recommendations from an assessment panel.

Before submitting your final application to us, remember to ask a colleague or a third party to peer review and proof read your application.

Application form

Applications must be made using both part 1 and part 2 application forms. They must be submitted by email to fifapplication@mfe.govt.nz. For application submission requirements, please refer to page 38 of the Freshwater Improvement Fund Guide for Applicants 2017.
