The MfE Data Service provides free online access to environmental datasets we publish. This page provides information on the service including licensing requirements.
Access the MfE Data Service
Soon, the MfE Data Service will be moving to the Koordinates cloud platform. In preparation for this, from 30 June we are asking users to give permission to migrate their user accounts from MfE to Koordinates ID, managed by our platform providers, Koordinates. Learn more about this move at https://data.mfe.govt.nz/migration-to-koordinates-id/
About the MfE Data Service
We launched the MfE Data Service in March 2015. It enables free web-based access to the environmental data we publish including on air, atmosphere, climate, fresh water, land and marine.
It also provides an application programming interface (API) which allows this data to be automatically accessed by other web services or applications.
The datasets we publish are being progressively added to the MfE Data Service. Browse the MfE Data Service for those currently available.
Through the service we are improving the accessibility of publicly funded environmental information as part of our obligations under the:
- Declaration on open and transparent government [ICT.govt.nz website]
- Government ICT strategy and action plan to 2017 [ICT.govt.nz website].
Our leadership in open data
The Ministry for the Environment has been releasing open government data about New Zealand's environment since 2009. We were ranked one of the top agencies for adoption of the Declaration of Open and Transparent Government in 2015.
Licensing and permissions
Environmental data has been uploaded to the MfE Data Service with the permission of data providers. Licensing is available on the service for each dataset. This defines who to attribute and how the data can be used.
