Fresh water is one of our greatest natural assets. It’s crucial to our way of life, our environment and our economy. We value it for recreation and spiritual well-being. Māori regard it as a taonga of paramount importance. Whether you live in the city or the country, water sustains many of the industries that create our wealth.
So water quality matters to all of us. That’s why we need good data about fresh water to help us protect and manage it sustainably.

Our leadership in open data
The Ministry for the Environment has been releasing open government data about New Zealand's environment since 2009. In 2015, we were ranked one of the top agencies for adoption of the Declaration on open and transparent government. See the Declaration and the 2015 Report on Agency Adoption of the Declaration on the ICT.govt.nz website.
