Satellite data

This page provides information on how organisations can access and use satellite imagery for their own research, monitoring and reporting purposes.

How the imagery can be used

Organisations can use the national imagery datasets (primarily from satellite) for:

  • land management
  • infrastructure planning
  • emergency management
  • the Ministry for the Environment’s intranet GIS applications
  • forest-age assessment
  • land-cover mapping
  • gap-filling aerial photography.

Access provisions

Licensing restrictions vary but most of the imagery was purchased by the Ministry for the Environment under an “All-of-Government” licence agreement.  Agencies qualifying under the “All-of-Government” licensing terms are central, regional and local government, universities and crown research institutes.  Agencies contracted to do the work of any of these bodies may be granted limited access at the discretion of the licensor.

Any applicable terms of use and end user license agreements must be signed and strictly adhered to.
