National direction for aquaculture
National direction sets out how specific resources should be managed to protect the environment, strengthen the economy and enable New Zealanders to provide for their social and cultural well-being.
Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing primary sectors in the world and an opportunity for national and regional economic growth in New Zealand.
The Ministry of Primary Industries with the Ministry for the Environment, the Department of Conservation and Te Puni Kokiri are to develop a nationally-consistent framework for the sustainable management of aquaculture space. This is to provide greater certainty for investment in aquaculture while supporting better environmental outcomes and community confidence in the industry. It will be done using legislative tools under the Resource Management Act (RMA) and is a Government priority, see A way forward for national direction.
