The National Environmental Standard for Sources of Human Drinking Water came into force on 20 June 2008. The Ministry has prepared a database to assist with implementation of the standard.
A GIS-compatible database of drinking water source abstraction points and drinking water treatment plants has been prepared and sent to all regional councils. The information in this database has been obtained from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), who maintain the Water Information New Zealand database on behalf of the Ministry of Health. (This database is referred to in regulations 4 and 5 of the National Environmental Standard for Sources of Human Drinking Water (PDF 91KB)).
The database also contains some information on individual treatment plant compliance with the Drinking water Standards for New Zealand 2005. This assists councils to determine whether drinking water from an individual treatment plant meets the health quality criteria (referred to in regulations 4 and 5 of the national environmental standard).
The database is in Access format and is intended to be integrated with existing regional council GIS systems.
