South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty

New Zealand has been a staunch campaigner against the testing of nuclear weapons and the disposal of nuclear wastes in this part of the world. The 1985 South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty and Protocols (negotiated by members of the South Pacific Forum) is one result of this campaign. Its objective is to establish a nuclear free zone in the region and to keep the region free of environmental pollution by radioactive wastes.
