Public Notice of Preferences Requested in Respect of Proposed Water Conservation Order for the Hurunui River

Section 201 and 204 Resource Management Act 1991

The New Zealand and North Canterbury Fish and Game Councils and the New Zealand Recreation Canoeing Association have applied for a water conservation order in respect of the Hurunui River.  The time for submissions expired on 15 December 2008.

Pursuant to section 205(3) RMA, some submitters have sought preferences to the proposed Water Conservation Order.  The preferences include matters such as: water quality standards, level and rate of flow, inclusion of the Mandamus River and other tributaries, recognition of further outstanding cultural and spiritual values, and integration with a regional plan.

There is now opportunity for further submissions on the preferences. Such further submissions are not to contain any further preferences under section 205(3), and existing parties to the proceedings do not need to file further submissions to be parties in the proceedings.

The submissions should be referred to for full details and scope of all the preferences. Contact Alex Miller, administrative officer to the Special Tribunal, on (04) 439 7432 if you have trouble accessing the submissions.

Any person may make a further submission on these preferences. Submissions must be made in writing, state which existing submission it is on, state the reasons for the further submission and the relief sought.  Further submissions must be served on the Special Tribunal at:

These must be received by the Special Tribunal no later than 5:00pm on Friday 13 February 2009.

As soon as reasonably practicable after sending your further submission to the Special Tribunal, you must also serve a submission on the applicant by sending it to their address for service:
