The role of the Environmental Protection Authority

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is New Zealand’s Competent Authority for trans-boundary movement of hazardous wastes. The EPA:

  • liaises with foreign competent authorities about import and export movements
  • determines if a permit to import or export will be granted.

New Zealand Law

The obligations relating to the import and export of hazardous WEEE are specified in the Imports and Exports (Restrictions) Act 1988 and the Imports and Exports (Restrictions) Order (No. 2) which is made under the Act.
