Preliminary results of the pilot process
One of the key aspects of the any waste data collection and reporting
process, is finding ways to get maximum value from the available data
including that collected by other agencies or methods.

the Waste Data Pilot to date.
In the case of the Waste Data Pilot project the following data sources
have been used:
Organic Waste
- Combine quantity of waste to landfill and WAP/SWAP data to give
quantity of organic waste disposed of to landfill.
- Use data from organic waste contractors and local authorities to
give regional organic waste diversion figures.
Using this data, for the Waikato:
- Present (or existing) Green waste diversion = 36.8 % (of total green
waste)
- Diversion of organic (green waste and kitchen scraps) waste = 22.5
% (of organic waste)
Calculations and assumptions
Organic waste diversion in the Waikato:
- Waste disposed of to landfill = 323,894 tonnes
- Total measured waste (landfill + recycle + organic) = 388,092 tonnes
- Organic waste disposed of to landfill = 27.9 % or 90,366 tonnes
- Organic waste diverted from landfill = 26,291 tonnes
- Total organic waste (landfill and diversion) = 26,291 + 90,366
= 116,657 tonnes
- Organic diversion = 26,291 / 116,657 = 22.5 % of total organic
waste
- If green waste is 50 % of the landfilled organic waste stream and
all of the waste stream diverted to composting then:
- Green waste diversion = 26,291 / ((50 % x 90,366) + 26,291) = 36.8
%
