Ways we can improve the management of old and unwanted tyres
The Ministry's tyre programme is based on key findings from background
work undertaken in 2003. Our studies suggested that:
- There was a need to improve tyre collection systems in New Zealand.
Improved collection systems should encourage good management practice
while discouraging unauthorised dumping or storage. By providing information
about tyre volumes and location, improved collection would also reduce
barriers to recycling of tyres.
- There were a small number of companies capable of using tyres in
very high volumes, mainly as a substitute for other fuels. Two believed
that they can operate within the current market, while the cost of
obtaining tyres is a barrier for others. Security of supply of tyres
is a major concern for all potential users.
To address these findings, the Ministry for the Environment has been
