The Solid Waste Analysis Protocol

The Solid Waste Analysis Protocol methodology recommends a base survey of one week duration but emphasises the fact that to obtain a statistically valid estimation of waste composition a programme of surveys is required to allow for factors such as seasonal variation.

The new SWAP does not contain a methodology for the collection of data on hazardous waste (old WAP Module A); this will be developed through the Hazardous Waste Management Programme.

The Ministry has developed a survey design spreadsheet (Excel 35 KB) based on Appendix 12 of the SWAP document. The calculations in the spreadsheet are useful for developing sampling plans and interpreting survey results, where possible data from the survey location should replace the default data (from trials undertaken in Christchurch).

The Ministry for the Environment has instituted a Solid Waste Analysis Protocol Baseline programme to provide solid waste composition information at four indicator sites from around New Zealand
