Intervention into the consent process
The Ministry has the option to become involved in the consent applications for new or existing sites if the site does not conform to good practice in terms of design, siting, or operational procedures (assessed with reference to the Landfill Guidelines (PDF 667 KB) (Centre for Advanced Engineering, 2000) and the Ministry for the Environment's Hazardous Waste Management Guidelines) and/or the duration of the consents sought is not appropriate in the context of the aim to improve landfill practice in New Zealand by 2010.
Our preference is to be involved in the process as early as possible and where possible to avoid become involved in the formal process i.e. applications are consistent with good practice in New Zealand and the aims as set out in the New Zealand Waste Strategy. The waste strategy also sets out targets for waste disposal.
