Landfill discharges monitoring (section 6 in the Guide)
Monitoring is part of the overall management system for a closed landfill and should consider a variety of situations (low flow/high flow etc) and provide adequate data for the operator and the regional council to monitor environmental effects.
Leachate monitoring
- quantities, strength and composition of leachate
- leachate monitoring locations should be established based on variation
in the waste disposed of at the landfill.
Landfill gas monitoring (section 6.9)
- determine the extent of any landfill gas migration offsite
- identify migration pathways
- assess risks onsite and at neighbouring properties
- identify any requirement for landfill gas control measures.
Parameters chosen for surface water and groundwater quality monitoring programmes should be able to:
- describe the overall status of the waters adequately
- detect contaminants discharged from the landfill or other relevant sources reliably
- be measured consistently, quickly and cost-effectively.
- Trigger levels can be set to provide early warning of possible non-compliance
issues.
Significant additional information on monitoring programmes and estimating landfill gas generation is included in this Guide.
