The Value of Urban Design

The Value of Urban Design research was commissioned by the Ministry for the Environment (MfE), together with Wellington City Council (WCC) and the Auckland Regional Council (ARC). The research identifies the economic, social and environmental benefits of urban design and is intended to support the implementation of the New Zealand Urban Design Protocol and urban design work programmes in WCC and ARC.

The Value of Urban Design research surveys international literature and existing New Zealand research to identify evidence of the benefits of good urban design. New Zealand case studies and examples are provided where possible, and international findings are evaluated and presented so that they can be applied in the New Zealand context.

The Value of Urban Design research clarifies the linkages between quality urban design, the quality of our built environment, the state of our economy, and our quality of life. The research will be particularly relevant to property investors and developers, decision makers in government and local government, and to those who have a major influence on the built environment.

The Value of Urban Design research was released by Minister Hobbs on 28 June 2005 at a launch event in Auckland. Read the Minister's release speech.
