Land use and transport

Land use and transport are fundamental components of urban decision making. Quality land use and transport connections can help our cities and regions to grow economically, improve our environment, and enhance our quality of life.

The Urban team is currently working with a number of central and local government agencies, under the Transport Sector Strategic Directions Document 2006/07 (PDF 795KB), to influence transport decisions and promote better transport outcomes. Some of the key projects the Urban Team is engaged in are:

  • Photo of Wellington bus terminal. Integrated Approach to Planning (IAP)
IAP is a joint central government initiative, led by Transit NZ which aims to better integrate land use and transport. It is a two year project which will review the issues and opportunities for legislation, non-statutory policies, and government capacity to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Influencing demand for transport services
This is a joint project between transport agencies, local government and the Ministry for the Environment which aims to identify better ways of applying travel demand management (TDM) in New Zealand. TDM takes a holistic approach towards transport planning and aims to reduce travel demand through tools such as road pricing, parking management, business travel planning and mixed use development.
  • Urban Design Transport Group
The Urban Design Transport Group (UDTG) was formed to realise a common transport sector approach to urban design. The UDTG includes government transport agencies which are signatories to the Urban Design Protocol, including Transit NZ, Land Transport NZ, Ministry of Transport, ONTRACK and the Ministry for the Environment.
