2007 Govt3 awards

Public sector agencies ‘walk the talk’ to sustainability

This is the third year of the Govt3 Awards. The aim of the awards is to recognise best-practice performance and acknowledge progress made against eight award categories.

Nominations opened on 1 July and closed on 31 August, with the awards ceremony being held on Wednesday 10 October 2007.

We received 45 nominations across 10 categories, which are summarised in the Govt3 Awards 2007 nominees booklet.

Govt3 award winners and highly commended nominees

Sustainable buildings/fit-outs (environmentally sustainable design)

Highly commended: Housing New Zealand
Winner: New Zealand Police

Criteria for this award

  • Better design and operation of buildings to improve economic and environmental outcomes
  • Use of energy, water and materials, generation of waste and wastewater, and influence on travel patterns of occupants

Recycling/waste minimisation

Highly commended: Ministry of Science, Research and Technology
Winner: Inland Revenue Department

Criteria for this award

Office consumables and equipment

Highly commended: Inland Revenue Department
Winner: Ministry for the Environment

Criteria for this award

  • Most of the consumables and equipment used in an office require significant energy and materials during their life cycle; production, delivery, use, and disposal
  • The most significant impact sources – size of demand, use of consumables and energy, and disposal – can be directly influenced by agency staff

Sustainable transport

Highly commended: Accident Compensation Corporation
Winner: Housing New Zealand

Criteria for this award

  • More efficient use of transport resources and choice of safer and cleaner transport options

Sustainable procurement practice

Highly commended: Ministry of Social Development
Winner: Accident Compensation Corporation

Criteria for this award

  • Good-practice sustainable procurement extends the ‘best value for money’ consideration to the whole of product or service life

Sustainable improvement in energy efficiency

Highly commended: Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Justice
Winner: Department of Corrections

Criteria for this award

  • Encourage, promote and support energy efficiency, energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources

Engaging staff in Govt3 – agencies with less than 200 staff

(no highly commended)
Winner: Ministry of Research, Science and Technology

Criteria for this award

  • Where there has been significant involvement by staff in Govt3 initiatives, for example staff involvement in waste audits, recycling of paper, bottles, cans, plastics 1 and 2, duplex printing, switching off lights, computers etc

Engaging staff in Govt3 – agencies with more than 200 staff

Highly commended: Ministry of Economic Development
Winner: Inland Revenue Department

Criteria for this award

  • Where there has been significant involvement by staff in Govt3 initiatives, for example staff involvement in waste audits, recycling of paper, bottles, cans, plastics 1 and 2, duplex printing, switching off lights, computers etc

Leadership in Govt3 – agencies with less than 200 staff

Highly commended: Antarctica New Zealand
Winner: Ministry of Research, Science and Technology

Criteria for this award

  • Where agencies are implementing a number of Govt3 initiatives across a number of the key four topics

Leadership in Govt3 – agencies with more than 200 staff

Highly commended: Department of Conservation
