Market gardens

Intensive vegetable growing in New Zealand typically relies on high inputs of fertiliser and agrichemicals, so careful management is needed to minimise impacts on soil and water resources.

The Ministry for the Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have supported the Franklin Sustainability Project, which has developed and published best management practices to reduce soil loss and promote Integrated Pest Management through field days.

The New Zealand Vegetable and Potato Growers Federation has been a key industry partner in this initiative.
