The previous Environment Minister Trevor Mallard appointed an independent board of inquiry in August 2008 to consider a proposed national policy statement for flood risk management.
The Ministry has developed a draft national policy statement and is currently identifying the costs and benefits of and alternatives to a national policy statement.
The government needs to be confident that a national policy statement is the best tool in terms of cost and in achieving the desired outcome before releasing it to the board of inquiry for public notification. Work is currently being carried out by the Ministry on these areas and it is not expected that a national policy statement would be ready for public comment until mid 2010, if it proceeds. The board of inquiry will become operational closer to this time.
