The government’s focus for the future

The government recognises climate change as a long-term strategic issue for New Zealand within the broader context of economic transformation, national identity, and other leading issues, for example, water quality and flood control.

In the public debate, the issue of climate change has tended to be viewed in a short-term context with the Kyoto Protocol and the first commitment period (2008 – 2012) being the primary focus and goal. This needs to change if we are to meet the challenge of a changing climate. The issue of climate change will require a long-term vision, enduring policies and initiatives that are in New Zealand’s best interests, and responsible actions.

The following points highlight the government’s focus on the way ahead:

  • We need to be strategic as a country and think about where we want to be in 30 – 40 years time.
  • Action is required at multiple fronts. This includes preparing for climate variability as well as reducing emissions.
  • Climate change is a global issue and New Zealand needs to be influential.
  • Industry, general public, businesses, and the international community need to be involved.

For more information, see the Cabinet paper, Climate Change Policy: The Way Ahead which outlines the government’s future direction on climate change.

To support the government’s strategy, a series of climate change work programmes have been approved and are being implemented.
