Consultation round one

Over October to December 2001, the Government sought the views of New Zealanders on the implications of ratification, the proposed legislation for ratification and what policies New Zealand might use to meet its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.

Feedback from this consultation was used in the development of a National Interest Analysis which was tabled in Parliament in February 2002. This analysis report is a requirement for any international agreement that the New Zealand Government enters into, providing the rationale behind why New Zealand should become party to the Kyoto Protocol, and the economic, social, cultural and environmental effects of the treaty entering into force.

Other documents relating to the consultation are available under Cabinet papers & decisions and economic modelling reports.
