A series of programmes for further work around preparation for, and adaptation to climate change have begun. Consultation has been completed and the implementation phase is underway.
The programmes have two main objectives: to take short-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and deal with the potential impact of climate change; and to assist in the development of long-term solutions that will protect and enhance the New Zealand economy and our way of life.
Implementation of the programmes involves a cross-sector, whole-of-government response. Many of the programmes require input from key stakeholders and consideration of different mechanisms, including for some areas voluntary approaches or the use of fiscal measures.

NZ climate change solutions are also summarised in the document New Zealand’s climate change solutions: An overview.
The actions being taken to reduce emissions and the work being done to help people prepare for and adapt to climate change can also be found at the New Zealand climate change information website.
