Environment New Zealand 2007

New Zealand’s second national state of the environment report, Environment New Zealand 2007, was released on 31 January 2008.

Environment New Zealand 2007:

  • takes the pulse of the physical well-being of New Zealand’s land, water, air, plants and animals
  • measures the impact of transport, energy, waste, and our consumption on the environment
  • identifies trends in and selected pressures on our natural resources
  • will be used to inform and prioritise decision-making by central and local government, as well as business and in the community
  • provides a baseline against which to monitor changes in the environment through regular reporting by the Ministry for the Environment.

Environment New Zealand 2007 uses national environmental indicators to present information on key aspects of the New Zealand environment and track how these have changed over time. Where possible, the report shows changes since 1997 when the first state of the environment report - The State of New Zealand’s Environment 1997 - was produced.

Environment New Zealand 2007 is intended to be informative and thought-provoking for both those New Zealanders responsible for environmental decision-making and general readers alike. While much of the content is technical in nature, the report aims to present information at a level that is relevant to all readers.

The report plays an important role in establishing regular and ongoing national-level reporting on the state of New Zealand’s environment, in line with the national environmental reporting programme. In part, its value is in setting a benchmark against which environmental outcomes can be monitored over time.

Both Environment New Zealand 2007 and the environmental indicators complement state of environment reporting by local government. While council reporting provides detailed information about the local environment, Environment New Zealand 2007 provides a national overview.
