  • The context in which we work: New Zealand is heavily reliant on its natural environment for its economic wellbeing. The Ministry works with central government, local government, business and the community to achieve its aims.

  • Environmental policy statement: An overarching environmental policy statement for the Ministry for the Environment has been agreed in principle by management. There is also an energy policy and a waste policy.

  • Other environmental agencies: The Ministry often works in partnership with other government agencies, such as the Department of Conservation, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Economic Development and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which have specific responsibilities not covered by our Ministry.
  • Natural Resources Sector: Chaired by our Chief Executive, the Sector comprises a network of nine government agencies and aims to ensure a strategic, integrated and aligned approach is taken to natural resources development and management.
